This a sequence from Hayao Miyasaki's last film, The Wind Rises, about the aircraft designer and dreamer, here he has a daydream about attaining his goal, to fly an aircraft of his own design. He flies over a harbour, along a river, beneath bridges, before overflying a town, bringing pleasure to those below.

This is a partial clip of the sequence:

here is a breakdown of the cinematography using some drawovers of the scenes:

first we have Jiro in his plane, the angle is a MS from the side , so a strong movement from screen right to left.

2-cut to MLS, from behind, camera moving in, BG straight toward camera, as plane flies away, forces are simultaneously to and from point at center.

3- shot cont. - action turns to screen left, camera pans to follow

4- cont - plane gains screen left, while moving UP in frame, while a boat enters frame left, moving towards screen right with the pan

5- cont - boat continues to screen right, moving DOWN in frame,

6- CUT to- MLS or full shot, action directly towards camera, BG moving away, but WITH BIAS TO SCREEN LEFT. also scene is staged so BOAT IS SEEN SCREEN RIGHT , where it was in the previous scene, creating some visual continuity, but in the upper part of the frame, avoiding a jump cut.

7- CUT - POV of Jiro, Camera moving directly toward center screen, main action lines are to and from center.

8- CUT - MCU on Jiro - facing camera but still BIAS to screen left, Bg panning/zooming back to a point just off screen.

9- CUT - BACK- WS - to include bridge as he flies toward camera, under bridge, then exits frame screen leftclose to camera, note in most of the shots a strong DIAGONAL from LOWER RIGHT to UPPR LEFT - very deliberate!

10,11- now he CUTS and stages the action from the opposite side, reversing the action lines of the sequence. evrything now moving from left to right.

12,13- cuts to PANNING SHOT - left to right - so KEEPS UP the movement initiated by the previous shot, note long line of smoke moving left to right as well, into upper part of screen right, then plane enters shot form below camera, towards screen center, then turns and flies INTO area set up by smoke action. Over all action lines a re are big curve from lower center to screen right... pretty cool, huh?

14,15,16 - CUT to - down angle, more or less his POV again, crowd on balcony, DIAGONAL PAN, moving lower right to upper left ( again), CUT closer to same , the CUT to - 180 degree angle - which means we n must see him moving from Left to RIGHT.

A bit wordy, but wanted to impress on you the WORK and CARE that goes into staging a sequence like this PLUS creating an appealing and emotion-filled bit of cinema( fun, free, joyful, exhilarating, etc.)

pardon all the junk in the images, I was working from a clip online and wanted to preserve the aspect ratio, i didnt crop out the logos etc.

cheers! scott

If you are not aware of Emmett and his work, or
haven't seen these, they are astounding - no digital enhancement, no computers, just mechanical creativity in action before your very eyes. So to make this a more special event, i am going to lead a RefSketch outing to go see - and DRAW - them. Anyone welcome! see the info attached:
For the last six months , i couldn't seem to get onto my own blog. That plus the intrusion of other social media - Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, the various forums that I contribting to by way of my online teaching - it has all drawn me away from this site. Meant a long hiatus. Imagine my pleasure and frustration when i tried today and find that I am able to post. All this stopping and starting isn't good in the long run, at least given the purpose of the blog, which is to attract attention for possible employment, visibility within the artistic community, but seems to be a pattern for me; hot and cold. So, a bit deflated, but hope springs eternal, so will attempt another round of blogging. Plenty to talk about since the the last one.
And this is the biggest thing for me in the last year - attempting to launch something that will go beyond the regular workaday - a series of workshops designed to help people with their drawing and appreciation of research and reference, which i am always going on about - we have done four events so far since February, very successful artistically if not financially - drawing at the ROM, at Kaj Pindals' backyard and at the Tall Ship festival at Harbourfront in July. Will be posting more on this soon. Follow on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/refsketch/

A quick motion test, done using Photoshop: a simple sketch, applied transformation tool and added a short panning move. Very simply done, but gives surprising good sense of 3D...looks like one of those helicopter shots.

I get al ot of comments from students that they feel bad for "not getting perspective".
Well, i get you, although i will say, it seems to be more self-flagellation, as though you will receive a benediction for it:

Student: "Oh I'm no good at it ".." I can't do perspective...", "...I just want to be a character designer..."
Instructor: "Well, that's OK, I 'll give you a pass, you don't really have to work very hard at anything, the world will give everything for nothing anyway, why don'y you just go and draw the same characters over and over instead."
Student: (relieved): "whew, thanks, world, that's a load off my mind!"

Seems as though saying it excuses them from doing it. Or, after saying it, they expect to then be touched with a magic wand and be suddenly good at it.

Nothing i can do when you say that, except I don't buy it.

Anyone can be good at anything, they just have to do the work.

Yes, perspective is one of those things that defeats many. Don’t know why, but it is partly that we no longer live in a world where being able to draw perspective was the norm.

Or a world where being able to play the piano was the norm.

Or being able to fix your own car was the norm.

it isn't considered a fundamental of art training and stopped being taught as such.
stopped being considered a staple of art training

In commercial art of the first part of the twentieth century, traditional art study was still in effect in most places. This meant perspective, academic drawing, painting, anatomical study, etc.

Then attitudes changed.

Reasons?
so many - world war two, modern art, a faster planet, technology.

Solidly structured art was supplanted by more interpretive approaches.
Photography took on a greater role - as the final image in advertising and journalism (see today’s illustration vs that of the 30s 40s or 50s)

and therefore the artists and teachers in place now, except for a few, don't really know the basics.

It just isn’t “in the air” any more.. plus the digital revolution that lets the computer now do it.

During the heyday of the career - Nelvana, Bluth, Disney, Pixar etc. - I never really had any discussions about perspective with my peers - that is, the other journeyman level layout artists that I worked with. It was plain they could all pretty much draw the stuff, but we never , at least not often, got into any long form theoretical discussion of horizons, VPs, etc. One would just do a quick sketch of your intentions and make sure that the story points or whatever were clear. It was kind of a given.
I had never done very much theory of it, i just drew what seems right and it came out.

Where did they/I get it from?

And yet, there is more traditional art instruction available today than ever before.

This thinking may be a bit old fashioned..but I am a traditionalist, and I think it’s great to know this stuff.

And - when the Singularity occurs, the machines don’t let us use our computers to do perspective; we’ll be forced to rely on the old ways…then the perspective heroes will rise!

i absolutely remember watching movies on TV in the early 70s( when i first began to really "watch" them,)

staying up late, pleading with my mother to let me watch "Fall of the Roman Empire" or some such and it was still thrilling, but seeing Alec Guiness cut off on one side of the screen and Steven Boyd ditto on the other, and feeling there was something going on, but not sure what.. oh well, you just went with it.. all in black and white too, as we didn't have a colour set yet!

" How can I figure out a way to generate thumbnails efficiently?"

" Do you have any practical advice when it comes to thumbnail sketching in general, like how to quickly generate the idea, not to stay too long on a single thumbnail, or finding a good way to quickly generate detail?"

What was your education, and how did you come to do layout/storyboarding,?"

here are a few disjointed answers:

I drew A LOT.
A cliche answer, but simply true.
One of my pleasures in life was sitting down, putting on some good music and simply drawing away an afternoon.

I stayed in a lot of Saturday afternoons and just drew.

These are some things i drew:

-We had some books in the house, but the book field was not like today. The typical living room of the mid 60s did not have shelves creaking with books, or if they did, it would be the Book-of-the-Month Club variety.

We did have a collection: the Readers Digest Children's Library, illustrated by the likes of Robin Jaques.

We had two of the Time-Life Libraries: the Science Library and the Nature Library: I wore them out. Not alot of illustration per se, but they had the now famous illustrations of archaeology and paleontology, by the likes of Zdenek Burian and Charles Knight and Jay Matternes. This was balanced by any book on dinosaurs in the public library and the occasional issue of Star Spangled War Stories.
There was a copy of the "history of Earth by H.G.Wells, who I already connected with War of the Worlds. Had some rather disappointing ink line illustrations

I went through a phase of being besotted by engravings and 19th century art, ( might be termed "steampunk" now, but I am thinking of art like Gustave Dore) where forms are created by pen and ink/gravure cross hatching. drew them all.

We had an illustrated edition of the Bible: colour plates of old master paintings. Scared the shit out of me.

I went through a Dennis the Menace phase, acquired a number of paperback collections and simply drew them all.

Mad Magazine

We got life and Look magazine, there was the ad illustration of the time.

Built a lot of scale model kits, so saw and drew from alot of box art - the art was then done in tradtional media, very inspirational and good to copy from -Leyenwood, in particular. But more importantly, building kits developed the sense of three dimensions - handling, viewing the models increased the solidity of any drawings I did of the planes.
Hunted the paperback racks of the local smoke shops, department stores, so called book stores of which there were two in my home town and could be classed more stationary stores. This yeilded alot of sct fi and fantasy illustrations, first time i saw Frazetta, McGinnis,

I grew up in a small town, with small town values.

The local art supply store, J. James and Daughters, carried everything, was the only real source i town for art books ( agian, apart from the public library). They had all the Walter Foster books, the old original ones, large format, picked up several during these years.. They might be considered a bit meh these days, but had some solid tips.
Do all the above.

Is it possible that blogs have outlived their usefulness, what with FB and Twitter, etc.? You gotta have something burning pretty bright to be seen out there in the cyber-wilderness...

here's a match flaring up; I am doing the Intro to Perspective for CGMA again for their Spring Sememster. This didn't go up here in time for potential sign ups, but the class is full, so once more, it's VPs and horizons and grids, oh my!
Many reasons for no posts of late, not that there hasn't been a lot going on...
But here is a quick announcement - I am doing the another class for CGMA's new semester, the Intro to Perspective course. This is the third time I have done the course, guess something 's working.
The course consists of some pretty hard core fundamentals - finding basic shapes in more exact ways, that correspond to station point, picture plane, intersecting forms, translation of points, planes and shapes and forms, some using traditional drawing and some using digital 2d techniques...
if you are interested, please sign up!

Has been said before, but while exhausting, these things are energy builders. its a curious thing, something that really is very inwards looking, only of interest to a niche crowd, can be a defining experience. Sales were slow, only sold about 5 books, didn't come anywhere close to covering costs, but somehow it doesn't matter. Great to see and talk to so many folks, great to have everyone there to help out the fest.Lots of advice and tips on how to improve the presentation, which I will take to heart. Do more Mary Blair type art, I suppose. Or cheesecake.
Didn't have a chance to go to any panels or screenings, except my own: a half hour demo up in the classroom on the 4th floor, reasonably well attended, and which i felt was successful because i winged it, and made a coherent presentation. then the big masterclass on Sunday afternoon, also reasonably attended considering the late slot in the schedule, but not quite so successful in presentation - ihad prepred way too much material and ended up rushing through it. had to slide throught a couple of points where i wasn't sure of my facts. Well, next time. And will follow up here and elswhere online. Great tech help by the all the crew: Reese, Bianca, Stephanie, Natali, thanks!

Separate shout out to Nick Hendricks, former student, present friend, thanks tons for handling the table while i took off to drink beer- you are very deserving of your good fortune in life!

Thanks to Ian Heier for the pic;
This year I will be doing a 3 hour master class in Location/Environment Design, with the emphasis on perspective drawing and techniques. This going to be interesting, as i am not yet sure how i am going to fill three hours...but i will prepare some things, do some demo stuff, show lots of pictures and trust to luck. I do plan to devote most of the time to more advanced technique. So if perspective is your thing, or you would like it to be, come on out - it 's on Sunday afternoon at 5:30, is up against Eric Oh from Pixar , and 99 bucks to take - so that's alot fighting it, but will say this, it's not about being showy, it's just about fucking good drawing, so take your pick.
I am doing one of FOUR classes for Introduction to Perspective. here's the blurb on the site, here's the link:
Saw Jim MacAuley, mentor and teacher of mine and of all the great animators that came out of Sheridan - Mike Surrey, Nik Ranieri, Brian Ferguson, Duncan Marjoribanks, Chuck Gammage, Charlie Bonafacio, Andy Knight, Alvero Gaivoto, Bill Speers, Dean duBlois, Michel Gagne, Glen McQueen and so, so many others.
Any of the tradition of great draughtsmanship that Sheridan is known for ( that's another blog post), the force majeur that Canadian animators became in the commercial industry in the 80s and 90s is directly traceable to this man, with his snow white beard, and his dulcet Glaswegian tones. ( Everyone who studied under him does an imitation.)
Truly a wonderful man who gave freely of his time and talent to those around him.
Jim is near Montreal now, having moved from Perth to be closer to his family, and therefore close enough for an easy visit!
Of course, models and sketches of ships abound:
here's a few pics:
Here's the deal -- I 've just spent all of January and February at Studio Mikros/Monreal, as part of the production design team for The Little Prince, in production now.
Director Mark Osborn, previously of Kung Fu Panda, pretty neat guy.
International crew, from France, Canada, even a few Americans, from Toronto, Paris, Vancouver, Texas,
Obviously can't show any images of work from the show, but it will be slightly different and hopefully of interest to audiences. Will see what I can do to make this visually interesting.
Have decamped to montreal for January-February. Working on Little Prince, feature production for Mikros Image. And it's c-c--cold up here.

An example brought to class by a student, after discussion about screen direction, cutting, etc.
From " He's Just Not That Into You".

The sequence starts OK, with character B's head visible in the first shot at right, but when the sequence becomes a series of one shots, and the characters are both looking off screen right, it begins to feel as though character B is sitting to the left of A,, and A is looking off into an empty space. Interesting, an example of how real space can be messed up by screen space.
I haven't seen the whole movie, but it seems odd that this got past the editing stage.SCOTT CAPLEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00383231992299446364noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9077811632900798271.post-18301406223965352172013-12-02T20:36:00.002-08:002013-12-02T21:12:52.779-08:00Some how to : Motion Tests using Photoshop instead of AfterEffects Which I Find Too Damn Difficult

Well, not too damn difficult, but photoshop can yield a pretty decent 2d scene planning test. Although i don't see how to get ease in and out.
