Kalamazoo II

Was in Kalamazoo over the weekend with folks of KAFI. had a great time speaking in two workshop/panels, helping with portfolio reviews, attending screenigs of student and pro films and lots of talking and eating and drinking. The workshops were both to do with Creating A Character for Videogaming. How I, a guy who's worked mostly doing layout and background design, ended up doing a character design workshop, i 'm not quite sure, but I've designed a few characters in my time, so it wasn't a stretch.
Met up with some great industry folks, notably Ellen Besen, Madi of TAIS, Marc Glassman, prop. of Pages bookstore in Toronto,
Heather Kenyon of Cartoon Network, Mike Beltzer of Disney Feature Anim., Tom dow, Steve Stanchfield (yes, relation of the late great Walt Stanchfield), John Weldon, Animator Emeritus, and a ton of others.
I shared the workshops with Cris Boyer, of whom you shall hear more !
The fest was spread over the Radisson Hotel, The Centre for New Media and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum.

Pretty town, K'zoo, once off the main highway streets. Main Street America is unrecognizable these days, but the side streets of alot of samll towns are still filled with examples of those great American homes- large, porch-enclosed, gingerbread-encrusted- that are so typical of small town America and are seen in so many of the films made by old Hollywood: Lady and the Tramp, All My Sons, anything by Capra. We joked about how they had built this backlot just for us!

Going to the Kalamazoo Animation Festival this weekend; was asked to be a speaker on a couple of panels. Looking forward to it, i think. An interesting line up. Curious to see what it's like. Haven't been to Ka-zoo since the old SCA days...check it out here:
